Cigars we would truly love to smoke

When I began this journey, my goal was simple: to create cigars that I would truly love to smoke — flavorful, authentic, and crafted with care. Every tobacco bale we use is hand-selected, every blend is developed with precision, and every cigar is personally inspected to ensure it meets the highest standards.

We don’t chase mass production or shortcuts. Instead, we honor tradition, quality, and the art of cigar making. Alongside my trusted partner Ruth De León, we pour our hearts into each cigar, because we believe that every draw should tell a story — one of passion, patience, and pride.

I invite you to enjoy what we’ve created, not just as a product, but as a reflection of our dedication to the craft.

Sylvio Buchschatz President · De León Cigars

From El Cortecito to a boutique manufactory

In 1998, the story begins in El Cortecito, a quaint fishing village on the eastern shores of the Dominican Republic. There, a modest cigar store offered a simple pleasure: savor a cigar while watching the careful assembly of leaves — the living craft of cigar making.

In 2001, the manufactory came to life, founded by Ruth De León and her husband, Sylvio Buchschatz, from Germany. Their vision was clear: to craft cigars of unparalleled quality for a discerning clientele, with a deliberately limited yearly output. De León stands as the epitome of exquisite boutique cigars.

Partnering with the finest handpicked tobaccos — including those from the plantations of Sylvio’s dear friend Leo, a pioneering figure in Dominican tobacco cultivation — every cigar is masterfully blended by Mr. Buchschatz and expertly rolled by seasoned artisans.

Today, De León Cigars can be found in selected cigar stores, luxury hotels, smoking lounges, restaurants and duty-free destinations across multiple countries. Acute attention to construction and harmonious blends makes each cigar a veritable masterpiece.

Quality over quantity

Sylvio Buchschatz – President, De León Cigars Sylvio Buchschatz at the factory

Our founder and president meticulously hand-picks every tobacco bale and oversees the crafting of each blend. Alongside co-founder Ruth De León, they personally inspect every single cigar.

We prioritize quality over quantity, adhering to the guiding principle of crafting unparalleled blends. This dedication culminates in artisanal cigars that we take great pleasure in smoking — and we hope you find the same joy in them too.

Dominican leaf, chosen with intention

In the quest for top-notch leaf quality, De León works with some of the Dominican Republic’s most innovative premium tobacco growers.

While many producers seek leaves beyond the country’s borders, our focus remains primarily on tobacco sourced from within the Dominican Republic. Through dedicated relationships, we have access to a diverse selection of six distinct tobacco types — from filler to binder and the exquisite Dominican wrapper. Many of these variations originate from Cuban seeds.

This exclusive combination of tobaccos distinguishes our cigars from the majority of Dominican offerings.

Primary origin Dominican Republic — local leaf as the foundation of our blends.
Six tobacco types Filler, binder and wrapper selected for character and balance.
Cuban-seed lines Selected Dominican-grown variations with Cuban-seed heritage.
Hand-selected bales Every bale reviewed under Sylvio’s personal standard.
